Soon it’s Halloween, so take care. It’s a haunting we will go.
If you catch something moving out of the corner of your eye, it’s probably the one and only Butch Walker materializing live Friday at Amos’ Southend in Charlotte. Right off the bat – so to speak – understand that Butch Walker is everywhere.
I know this to be true after years of repeated encounters dating all the way back to his first round of rock stardom in the late 80s band SouthGang, right up to now as a solo artist who has recorded, written and produced a just released EP titled ‘Peachtree Battle.’ This EP joins multiple solo albums and a vast assortment of recording projects by this hard working Georgia rocker.
Hailing from Cartersville, Ga., the arc of development for Walker’s multi-faceted musical career has been high, wide and very lengthy. SouthGang’s glam slam surge was replaced by the rock ‘n’ funk format of Floyd’s Funk Revival evolving eventually into just The Floyds, popular fan favorites playing frequently in this area/region in the early 90’s.
After the funk phase, Walker was found fronting the guitar-driven rock trio known as Marvelous Three in the late 90s producing the national hit “Freak of the Week” and several albums.
Carrying on with his creative track, Walker concentrated on what has become a prolific solo career while emerging as a skilled, popular producer and song writerworking with a long list ofpopular artists. His skills in the studio are dynamic and diverse. A popular go-to guy, Walker has also co-written songs with a host of folks.
Among his list of associations are Avril Lavigne, Pink, Bowling for Soup, SR-71, Katy Perry, All Time Low, Weezer, All American Rejects, Gavin Degraw, Taylor Swift, Fall Out Boy, Panic At The Disco, Sevendust, and the list just goes on.
Varied in his talents, his presence in the music industry is pervasive. At the end of 2005, Walker was named as Rolling Stone’s ‘Producer of the Year.’ Walker has also written an autobiography ‘Drinking with Strangers: Music Lessons from a Teenage Bullet Belt’ published in 2011 and a documentary directed by Shane Valdés and Peter Harding titled ‘Out of Focus’ premiered at the Nashville Film Festival in April 2012 focusing on Walker’s life and music.
Let’s just say Walker is a master of music, one of those rare artists with an easy natural gift, excelling no matter what he’s doing. Not only is he well-liked behind the scenes but he is a riveting entertainer out front. It’s no surprise that the affable and easy going Walker touts his current “incredible show” and his “incredible band” The Black Widows which features Walker along with Chris Unck, guitar/lap and pedal steel; Fran Capitanelli, lead guitar and Jake Sinclair, bass who are having “… the time of our lives on stage playing lots of new stuff and a ton of the old.”
It’s all coming together confirming that Butch Walker is everywhere, and most particularly live Friday along with his band The Black Widows plus guest support Marc Scibilia at Amos’ Southend, 1423 S. Tryon St., Charlotte. The Call 704-377-6874 or go to amossouthend.com for show info. For scoop on the music, visit butchwalker.com; twitter.com/butchwalker; and find him on Facebook.
