ROCK HILL — Investigators have found both cars involved in a drive-by shooting at a Rock Hill Walmart where a witness who took cover behind his car told police assailants fired at least five shots at each other late Friday, police say.
At about 8:15 p.m., officers received a call from a man, 41, who said he saw a gold Ford Taurus pull close to a cotton candy pink Ford Crown Victoria in the Dave Lyle Walmart parking lot, according to a Rock Hill police report. The passenger in the Taurus got out the car and began shooting at the Crown Vic. The witness told police he heard at least five shots as he ducked behind his car to avoid getting hit by a stray bullet.
Police could not find any shell casings in the area, or either vehicle, the report states. Police learned that the car was last seen getting onto Interstate 77. Officers found a green bandana on the ground and suspect possible gang activity.
By Monday, officers found both the Crown Victoria and the Taurus at different addresses in Rock Hill, said Executive Officer Mark Bollinger. The car owners are not suspected to have been involved in the shooting, but police are trying to determine who was using the cars at the time of the shooting, Bollinger said. Police do not suspect the witness had any involvement.
One of the men involved in the shooting met with police when his grandfather took him to the law center, police reported. The man, 19, told police he and a friend were driving through the Walmart parking lot when they noticed the people in a Crown Victoria began starting at them. They asked the group in the Crown Victoria what they were looking at. Thats when the people inside the Crown Victoria began firing bullets at them, the report states.
The back window of the Taurus was shattered. The passenger got out of the Taurus and returned fire, the report states.
Police pressed the victim for the passengers name, but he would not disclose, claiming that he did not know although he had been hanging around with him all summer, the report states. The victim also said he did not know the mans phone number, nor did he know the identity of a third man sitting in the Taurus back seat.
