Union County holds off Chester Cyclones 38-35

— The Union County Yellow Jackets raced to a 21-0 lead and made it stand up in a 38-35 win over the Chester Cyclones in Region 3-AAA action Friday night.

Dierrus Smith led the Union County attack with 213 yards passing. He completed seven of 11 passes. Christian Petty added 72 yards on the ground on 19 carries, while Shi Smith ran for 67 yards on 16 attempts.

T.J. Foster was the leading receiver for the Yellow Jackets with 147 yards on seven catches.

Chester was led by Tommy Sanders with 108 yards rushing on 12 carries. He also completed three of 10 passes for 135 yards. Quan Caldwell caught two passes for the Cyclones for 55 yards.

Shi Smith opened the scoring with a three-yard run. Dierrus Smith got the second touchdown on a seven-yard scamper and passed to Foster for six points to make it 21-0.

Chester began its comeback attempt late in the first quarter. The Cyclones’ Stanley Yarborough scored from eight yards out to cut the deficit to 21-7.

Dierrus Smith found Foster again on a short pass play and Union County was in front 28-7, but Chester answered. Earl Hinton returned the ensuing kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown, and it was 28-14.

Blake Berry kicked a 21-yard field goal, and the Yellow Jackets were in front 31-14. The Cyclones struck quickly again. Quan Caldwell scampered 90 yards with the kickoff to make it 31-21.

Chester struck again with 33 seconds remaining in the first half. Tommy Sanders found Lorenzo White for 60 yards and a touchdown, and the Yellow Jackets were up 31-28 at intermission.

After a scoreless third quarter, Union County scored to make it 38-35 when Shi Smith scored from one-yard out.

Chester answered with 1:50 remaining in the game, when Sanders hit Caldwell on a 55-yard pass play, but it was not enough.

The win improved Union County to 2-8 overall and 1-4 in region play. The loss dropped the Cyclones to 3-7 overall and 1-4 in the league
