Body found along Lancaster road

— A decomposing body was found in a wooded area along a Lancaster road on Saturday afternoon, authorities say.

The Lancaster County Coroner’s Office is working to identify the dead person found in the woods near Mullis Circle off West Meeting Street.

By Saturday evening, coroners had not been able to determine whether the body was a male or female, or the race of the person, Lancaster County Deputy Coroner Glen Crawford said.

Crawford was not sure how the body had been found, but coroners were notified at about 3:45 p.m., he said.

An autopsy is scheduled for 9 a.m. Sunday. Crawford said he hopes the preliminary autopsy results might uncover partial fingerprints leading to the person's identity. Saturday evening, officials were contacting local hospitals to see if there had been any missing persons reports recently.

The Lancaster County Sheriff's Office is also involved in the investigation, but did not have many details to share.

Sheriff's Office Maj. Matt Shaw said there was not enough information available to comment about possible foul play.

The body "has been there for an extended period of time," he said.
