Gunfire erupts in Rock Hill neighborhood

— Shots were fired and shell casings lined the streets of a Rock Hill neighborhood Wednesday night, but authorities were unable to track down the people involved except for a man who says he fired back at the unknown assailants because bullets zoomed by his head, police say.

At about 10 p.m., police were called to Pebble Road, off South Stonewall Avenue, after a homeowner, 30, reported that he and his girlfriend were sitting in their car when he heard “a bunch of gunshots,” according to a Rock Hill police report. The couple’s car was parked in the driveway of their home.

He told his girlfriend to take cover, while he got out of his car and heard several shots “go by his head and hit the house behind him,” the report states. He took out his own pistol and fired six shots towards the suspect, who has not been identified.

The gunman got into the passenger side of a car and left, the report states. Another person arrived on scene, the man said, and picked up some items from the ground before walking to the driveway of a nearby home. Police found three bullet casings in front of that house, and five casings from the victim’s house.

A neighbor reported that she found a bullet hole in her mailbox and damage to her vehicle's bumper.
