— A Rock Hill man who told police he went to Glencairn Garden to get away from his girlfriend wound up behind bars when authorities say he drank a beer on a bench while children and their parents were nearby on Wednesday.

At about 1 p.m., officers went to the gardens after witnesses complained about a man in a black hoodie and red hat drinking while sitting on a bench in the playground, according to a Rock Hill police report. Authorities found several small children and their parents in the park at the time.

The man, 29, had an open can of beer inside a paper bag sitting at his feet, police reported. The man told an officer that he went to the gardens to drink the 16 ounce Budweiser and get away from his girlfriend after they had a fight. The can was half-full by the time police arrested the man and charged him with public display of alcohol.
