Eagles lacrosse sets 2014 slate

Winthrop UniversityDecember 5, 2013

Winthrop lacrosse coach John Sung announced the team’s 17-game schedule for 2014, his second season with the Eagles.

The 2014 slate includes nine home matches at Eagle field and eight road contests.

Winthrop is coming off its inaugural NCAA season in which it went 9-8, totaling the most wins by a first-year program. The Eagles went 3-4 in conference, finishing fifth.

“This is a substantially harder schedule than we played last year,” Sung said. “We have four teams on our schedule that went to the NCAA Tournament last season. Our expectations are higher for year two and in order for us to grow we must play stiffer competition.”

The Eagles will open their second season of NCAA collegiate competition on Feb. 9 at Ohio State University.

Winthrop opens its home schedule at 6 p.m. on Feb. 14 against San Diego State. The Eagles will also host nonconference opponents St. Francis (March 5), Cincinnati (March 7), Denver (March 17) and Jacksonville (March 29).

The Eagles will be on the road for nonconference contests against George Mason (Feb. 23), Florida (March 12), Michigan (March 20) and Marquette (March 23).

The conference slate for the Eagles will start on April 4 when Winthrop travels to 2013 regular season champion Davidson for a 7 p.m. match. The Eagles will also travel to Campbell (April 11) and Liberty (April 25).

The 2014 conference tournament has been expanded from its inception last year. This season all eight teams will qualify for the tournament. The top four seeds will host quarterfinal matches Wednesday, April 30, 2014.

The semifinals and championship will be hosted by the regular season champion on Friday, May 2 and Sunday, May 4.
