Locals thrive at Southern Slam

Staff reportsDecember 9, 2013

A slew of local wrestlers enjoyed success at the Steadman Hawkins Southern Slam tournament held Dec. 6 and 7 at Eastside High School in Greenville.

Rock Hill finished third out of the 33 teams that participated. South Pointe and Fort Mill tied for seventh, while Nation Ford was 22nd and Chester 27th. Archer High School, out of Georgia, won the tournament by nearly 200 team points.

106-pounders A.J. Leitten (Fort Mill) and Devon Faile (Rock Hill) both placed in the top-four after reaching the individual semifinals. Faile fell to eventual 106-pound champion Vinny Artigues from Archer, while Leitten was pinned by Summerville’s James Sass in 2:28. The pair wrestled back to the consolation final where Leitten topped Faile with a 9-8 decision.

Rock Hill’s Logan Sexton placed fifth at 113 pounds, while Fort Mill’s Eddie Byrams wrestled to a tournament championship in the 120-pound bracket. He topped Eastside’s Charlton Clark 3-2 in the final.

Rock Hill 10th-grader Noah Mead claimed a third-place finish in the 126 bracket. Lexington’s Jackson Myers handed Meah a 14-4 decision defeat in the semifinal, before the Bearcat bested Eastside’s David Walker and Boiling Springs’ Jonathan Contreras to place third.

South Pointe senior Mike Miller remained undefeated on the season with a championship in the 132-pound class. Miller outlasted Lexington’s Andy Szalwinski in the semifinal before pinning Archer’s Grant Aycox near the end of the first period in the final bout to move to 15-0 on the season.

Nation Ford’s Michael Allen placed fifth at 138 pounds, and Rock Hill’s Kris Hughes also finished fifth, in the 160-pound group. Cody Childers was another Bearcat that finished fifth, in the 172-pound class, while Fort Mill’s B.J. Hurst finished second at 195 pounds after falling to Archer’s Elliott Lee in the championship of that weight class.

South Pointe senior Corey Morgan had better luck en route to a 220-pound title. Morgan stayed undefeated on the season (16-0) on the back of four pins and a 14-11 decision in the final over Alexander’s Spencer Gray. Rock Hill’s Josh English finished sixth in that same category.

Chester Cyclone Temaris Dixon finished seventh in the heavyweight class.
