A 12-year-old boy started a grass fire after he was left alone at his home near Rock Hill on Saturday, according to the York County Sheriff’s Office.

At first the boy told police that he saw a man in his backyard start a fire, then jump a fence and head toward nearby woods. He also told police he went to a neighbor’s house for help and tried to put the fire out with a shovel.

He later admitted to police he had been burning trash, which sparked a grass fire that later spread into the neighbor’s back yard.

The Bethesda Fire Department put out the fire and deputies located the child’s parents.
