A New York man was arrested on Thursday after he held a woman against her will in Clover, according to a press release by the Clover police.

When police arrived at the apartment complex at Willow Oaks Circle, they found Joseph Schmitt, 39, walking away from the apartment. They spoke to the person who had called for police, according to the release.

The woman, 40, told police Schmitt assaulted her and would not stop until she agreed to leave with him. She told Schmitt that she would go with him and when he walked out of the door, she closed and locked it and called police.

Schmitt faces assault and battery, kidnapping and drug charges.

Clover Lt. Tanner Davis said Schmitt had Diazepam, an anxiety medication, on him when he was arrested and that he and the woman had recently begun dating.
