Both the boys and girls used runs to pull out comfortable wins for a South Pointe Stallions sweep of the Rock Hill Bearcats on Friday night in basketball at South Pointe.
In the girls’ game, the Stallions, who won 56-40, led 16-8 after one period with half of those points coming from Raven Byers, who finished with 13 points to share the team scoring lead with T’Keia Williams. The home team kept the Bearcats at arm’s length from there on out.
They led 27-21 at the half.
Asia Potts for Rock Hill led all scorers with 16.
The boys’ game was a bit more testy than the final of 87-64 might indicate. South Pointe had a comfortable working margin on the Bearcats until about halfway through the second quarter.
The Stallions led 34-23 before the Bearcats put on a series of highlight reel plays aided by a ton of whistles against the hosts, including a technical foul, during a 17-2 run to take the lead. Rock Hill led 43-42 at the half.
Warren Vinson had 12 of his team-high 22 point in the period.
South Pointe quickly snuffed out any momentum the Bearcats took into the half by turning up the pressure on Rock Hill’s ball-handlers. Rock Hill called timeout after a quick 6-0 burst but the Stallions continued what turned into a 15-0 run with steals, layups and tip-ins to lead 57-43 before the Bearcats scored with 4:46 left in the quarter.
The game was filled with highlights and dunks but South Pointe out-athleted the visitors in the end.
Tyreece Brice led all scorers with 31 for the Stallions and Anthony Johnson had 21 on an array of tip-ins and dunks.
