ROCK HILL — A man and woman accused of breaking into several cars at a Rock Hill apartment complex on Tuesday, stealing gloves, socks and a GPS told police they were low on money and had to steal the items to support themselves, authorities say.
At about 3:20 a.m., a resident at Paces River Apartments told police he saw a man and a woman wearing hooded sweatshirts possibly tampering with cars parked at the apartment, according to a Rock Hill police report.
Police identified Brandon McAfee, 21, and Tiffany Smith, 24, as matching that description. Smith was sitting in a car that belonged to another resident, 20, the report states.
McAfee and Smith told officers they lived at the apartment complex, but they were unable to give an exact address, the report states. Smith told police she and McAfee were just looking at the cars, although police could see that the center consoles of the cars were open.
When police searched McAfee, they found a dagger with a fur-lined handle and scabbard, $15 cash, a GPS device, knit gloves and two socks.
The couple told police they were staying at the Regency Inn on Riverview Road, the report states. Smith later told officers that they were low on money and were supporting themselves by stealing.
McAfee was charged with two counts of breaking and entering an automobile, one count of criminal conspiracy and one count of unlawful carrying of a weapon, for the dagger in his pocket. Smith was charged with three counts of breaking and entering an automobile.
