The Rock Hill Bearcats defeated the Lancaster Bruins and the South Pointe Stallions in a four-way wrestling match Thursday night at Rock Hill.

The top-ranked Bearcats won eight matches by pin and defeated Lancaster 72-3. They followed with a 50-15 decision over South Pointe.

In the opener, Emilio Navarez, who lost almost 100 pounds to get to his current weight classification, dropped his match in the 195-pound division to Quishon Evans of Lancaster.

Evans took a 4-0 lead before Navarez scored to make it 4-1. Evans scored the next three points for a 7-1 lead, but Navarez recovered and scored the next three points to trail 7-4. He eventually lost 10-4.

Against South Pointe, Navarez won by pin to even his record on the year, but having him wrestling in that weight class was what really mattered.

“It is great to have him wrestling,” said Rock Hill coach Cain Beard. “Yes, he lost in the first match tonight, but he bounced back and got a pin in the second match. I am so proud of his effort.”

Beard is looking for good things from Navarez the rest of the season, because he knows the work ethic that Navarez has shown will pay dividends.

“The mistakes he made tonight are things that we can correct,” said Beard. “He will get better as the year goes along because he got better tonight. I am so proud of him for his performance tonight.”
