Deputies seek Lancaster man who cheated customers

— Deputies are searching for a Lancaster man who they say cheated three customers out of their money when they paid him for roofing services, but he never finished the work.

Authorities have issued warrants that charge Harvey Paul Laney, 43, with three counts of breach of trust over $2,000, according to news release issued Thursday from the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office. His last known address is 244 Doc Holiday Circle, off S.C. 9 and near the Lancaster Children’s Home.

Deputies learned that Laney has marketed himself as the owner of Carolina Roofing, listed in the yellow pages with a phone number and address, the release states. Over the last month, Laney has received at least three prospective clients in need of home repairs or improvements. After Laney gave them a quote and they agreed on the price, customers would then pay Laney an upfront cost for his services.

Then, deputies say, he intentionally failed to return to do to the work and could not be reached.
