Winthrop baseball to honor school’s first team

The 35th anniversary of Winthrop baseball will be commemorated on Saturday, Feb. 15, when the 1980 team is recognized on the field prior to the Eagles' 3 p.m. game against Akron.

Members of that first team have been invited back for the ceremony and a reception that will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Stone House on Eden Terrace.

Eagles head coach Tom Riginos said Kate Turbeville, the widow of Hall of Fame coach Horace Turbeville who started the Winthrop program, and members of the 1980 team in attendance will take part in the ceremonial first pitch.

Winthrop opens its 2014 season on Feb. 14 with a three-game set against Akron. The Eagles are scheduled to play 26 home games at The Winthrop Ballpark. Season tickets are now on sale at the Winthrop Ticket Office inside the lower level of the Winthrop Coliseum. For more information about tickets, call 803-323-2345.
