Irvine, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Luke Nelson poured in 28 points as the UC Irvine Anteaters held on for a 61-58 victory over the UC Irvine Anteaters in a Big West Conference collision at Bren Events Center.
Mamadou Ndiaye nearly had a triple double, recording a career-high 11 blocks to go with 10 rebounds and eight points for UC Irvine (15-9, 6-2 Big West), which has won consecutive games after a two-game slide.
Dan Jennings paced Long Beach State (9-13, 5-3) with 14 points. A.J. Spencer and Travis Hammonds added 10 points apiece, with Hammonds also tallying 10 rebounds.
Each team shot an even 40 percent from the floor in the first half, as they entered halftime tied at 31-31.
In the second half the Anteaters connected on 42.1 percent of their attempts from the floor and 12-of-16 at the free-throw line, which was enough to hold off the 49ers, who connected on just 28.6 percent from the field.
Long Beach State lost despite a 42-37 edge on the glass.
