Winthrop freshman pitcher Zach Cook was chosen preseason Big South Freshman of the Year by College Sports Madness, and senior outfielder Cody Dolan is a second team All-Big South selection.
Cook, a right-hander, looks to work his way into this seasons pitching rotation. He earned four varsity letters in high school and was All-League First Team and was ranked a Top 20 Ohio player.
Coach Tom Riginos says the freshman should have a very promising career with the Eagles. Zach is a big, strong pitcher with a low 90s fastball. I am extremely excited to have him as a part of our program. He is going to make a major impact on our pitching staff and has an extremely bright future.
Dolan had a stellar first year with the Eagles last season after transferring from USC Sumter. The right-handed hitter led the team in batting average (.300), at-bats (190), hits (57), runs scored (30), doubles (13), and home runs (3). He ranked third on the team for runs batted in with 19, with a season-high three coming against Charlotte. The outfielder had 14 multi-hit games and a team-best nine game hitting streak.
Riginos has high hopes for Dolan this season. I look for him to be a leader on and off the field. He brings toughness to our team.
