Winthrop Eagles’ Cook, Dolan earn preseason baseball honors

Winthrop freshman pitcher Zach Cook was chosen preseason Big South Freshman of the Year by College Sports Madness, and senior outfielder Cody Dolan is a second team All-Big South selection.

Cook, a right-hander, looks to work his way into this season’s pitching rotation. He earned four varsity letters in high school and was All-League First Team and was ranked a Top 20 Ohio player.

Coach Tom Riginos says the freshman should have a very promising career with the Eagles. “Zach is a big, strong pitcher with a low 90s fastball. I am extremely excited to have him as a part of our program. He is going to make a major impact on our pitching staff and has an extremely bright future.”

Dolan had a stellar first year with the Eagles last season after transferring from USC Sumter. The right-handed hitter led the team in batting average (.300), at-bats (190), hits (57), runs scored (30), doubles (13), and home runs (3). He ranked third on the team for runs batted in with 19, with a season-high three coming against Charlotte. The outfielder had 14 multi-hit games and a team-best nine game hitting streak.

Riginos has high hopes for Dolan this season. “I look for him to be a leader on and off the field. He brings toughness to our team.”
