— Winthrop’s Erica Williams has been selected as the Big South Conference Freshman of the Week, marking the sixth time this season that the 5-10 forward has been honored by the league.

The six Freshman of the Week awards received by Williams ties her with teammate Dequesha McClanahan for the most by a Winthrop player. She is one behind former High Point standout Cheyenne Parker, who had seven awards during the 2010-11 season, the same year that McClanahan was voted Big South Freshman of the Year. Williams, of Rex, Ga., averaged 14.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game to help lead the Eagles to a pair of Big South Conference victories last week. She started the week with a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in the win over Gardner-Webb on Thursday. Two days later against UNC Asheville, Williams scored 19 points on 58 percent from the floor and 83 percent from the line. She also chipped in eight boards, one assist, one block and one steal in the win over the Bulldogs. She is averaging 15.3 points and 8.1 rebounds, while connecting on 51 percent of her field goal attempts.
