Troopers respond to more than 2,000 calls in 24 hours

— The Highway Patrol has responded to more than 2,000 weather-related calls for service on South Carolina Highways in the past 24 hours.

That compares to 646 weather-related calls for the same time period last year.

Among the 2,044 calls the Highway Patrol responded to during the ongoing winter storm were (with comparable 2013 numbers in parentheses):

731 collisions (396)

553 drivers assisted (204)

446 trees in roadways (5)

117 abandoned vehicles (23)
