A Honda Civic was traveling south on Speed Limit Road in Varnville about 2 a.m. when the vehicle struck a tree in a roadway, Lance Cpl. Judd Jones said.

One passenger, 24-year-old Tiffani Johnson, of Ridgeland, was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck, Hampton County Coroner Ernie Washington Sr. said.

The driver, a 23-year-old man, was transported to the Hampton Regional Medical Center with serious injuries, Jones said.
