Common Core unacceptable

If the central planners and progressive bureaucrats get their way, teaching the Constitution to American schoolchildren will be a thing of the past.

Common Core is unacceptable. This top-down, bureaucratic takeover of local schools must be stopped. Common Core will dumb down education, collect data on kids and their families, and leave American kids behind in the global economy.

Since Washington politicians started running our schools, costs have exploded for taxpayers and kids’ test scores have decreased.

Weather didn’t stop service

On Thursday, the snowy, icy day that kept most of us from driving, the Red Cross called Beverly Carroll, Soup Kitchen director, asking her to open for those who were without food. Beverly called us to work and we agreed, providing we could get a ride in a four-wheel-drive vehicle.

She contacted Tim and Sarah Helline, and the Red Cross called the police. Voila, within 10 minutes, we had a Winthrop policeman at our door, and Joe Zdenek, another helper, got a ride to the kitchen by a Rock Hill policeman.

We put up an “open” sign, invited people into the warm kitchen and got started. We opened cans, stirred soup, made sandwiches, cut cake and while the snow intensified, were able to open at 11:30 a.m., on schedule. We got guests from the Haven, and neighbors got the word, bringing friends and children.

How wonderful we felt, using a combination of volunteers and the police to provide a meal on a day where most people had to stay home. Dorothy Day would be proud of our community cooperation!
