Lancaster head coach Ronnie Robinson said his Bruins were motivated after their first round loss to Ridge View last season and their first goal was to win the Region 3-AAAA championship.
Mission accomplished...in a big way.
Lancaster overcame foul trouble for their two star players Monday night and defeated the South Pointe Stallions 59-51 at South Pointe.
The victory finished off a perfect region season for the Bruins at 13-0. UNC-Wilmington commit Phoebe Johnson picked up her third foul with 3:13 left in the first half and Kyia Hough, bound for Western Carolina, followed with her third 19 seconds later. The Stallions took advantage of that and an 8-0 run to start the second period to lead 28-24 at the half. Raven Byers had eight in the first half for South Pointe.
There were three lead changes in the second quarter. Johnson picked up her fourth foul after playing 44 seconds in the third period and would foul out with ten points with 4:02 left in the game. Hough played the whole second half with three fouls and scored 16 of her game-high 20 points.
She was 8-of-8 from the free throw line in the half and the Bruins were 19-of-27. There were 57 fouls called in the game and 20 on South Pointe in the second half. The Stallions led 36-30 3:30 left in the third before Lancaster closed the quarter on a 9-0 run for a 39-36 lead. When Deiona Davis scored with 3:25 left, it cut the Bruins' lead to 48-46. Lancaster would then hit nine of their next ten free throws to keep the Stallions at bay. Franquia Byers led South Pointe with 11 on Senior Night.
“These girls decided after that game (playoffs) that they were going to win the region, get to the playoffs, and go for state,” Robinson said. “They set those goals then and they are a tight-knit group of girls. I just thank God for this.”
