High school roundup: Rock Hill Bearcats top Chester Cyclones in baseball tournament

The Rock Hill Bearcats baseball team defeated the Chester Cyclones 5-1 in the Chester County Natural Gas Tournament at Chester on Tuesday.

Zach Carter led the Bearcats wth a pair of hits, while Chase Watts and Will Reid each had one hit in the victory.

Reid picked up the win in the opening game of the season. He scattered four hits and struck out four. Carter picked up the save, retiring the final four batters.

The Bearcats will be back in action Wednesday at home playing Cardinal Newman at 5 p.m. They will then take on Westwood at 7 p.m..

In other baseball action on Tuesday, Indian Land edged Buford 5-4, while York toppled Gaffney 5-0.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Fort Mill Yellow Jackets defeated the Nation Ford Falcons 13-4 in Class AAAA action on Wednesday afternoon.

Claire Frase led Fort Mill with seven goals, while Rachel Denny paced Nation Ford with three goals.

Girls’ Soccer

The fourth-ranked Indian Land Warriors won three of four games in the Lugoff-Elgin Kickoff Classic, which was completed Monday afternoon.

The Warriors opened the tournament on Friday with a 3-2 win over Lancaster. Shalyn Dougherty and Kate Komorous each had a goal for the Warriors. Isabella Maia recorded five saves in goal for the Warriors.

On Saturday, the Warriors edged Andrew Jackson 1-0 on a goal by Dougherty.

The Warriors stayed unbeaten in the second contest on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Lugoff-Elgin. Dougherty got the only goal of the game on an assist from Kristen Carpenter.

Maia recorded 10 saves for Indian Land in the victory.

The winning streak came to an end in the championship game of the three-day tournament on Monday night when Lancaster toppled the Warriors 4-1.

Boys’ Soccer

Lancaster 5, Buford 4: The Lancaster Bruins edged the Buford Yellow Jackets 5-4 in non-region action Tuesday afternoon.

The Bruins (2-0) scored a pair of goals in the second half to break a 3-3 tie and pick up the victory.

Zeke Williams’ third goal of the game erased a 4-3 Buford lead in the second half. Lancaster got the game-winning shot from Shykwon McCullough.
