ROCK HILL — A Chester man accused of stealing a 55-inch flat screen television from a Tega Cay Walmart this week was arrested on Thursday after police say he tried returning it at a Rock Hill Walmart.
Police were sent to the Dave Lyle Boulevard store at about 2:20 p.m. after a store manager reported he spotted a burgundy Chevrolet Impala that matched the description of a vehicle involved in a shoplifting at the Tega Cay Walmart on Tuesday, according to a Rock Hill police report. The manager told police he received a memo sent to all Walmart stores in the area that detailed the vehicle and license plate number, and gave a description of a stolen Vizio flat screen TV.
Employees at the Tega Cay Walmart on Stonecrest Bouelvard told police that a man and woman left the store with the TV without paying for it, a Tega Cay Police report states. The TV is worth $729.
The Rock Hill manager told police he witnessed Darell Antwan Chisholm, 24, and an unidentified man take the TV to the store’s customer service desk and attempt to return it with a receipt, the report states. The clerk scanned the receipt and TV to compare the serial numbers. The clerk realized they were different. Once police were called, an officer parked his patrol car behind the Impala to prevent an escape. As the officer walked to the store, he saw the unidentified man run from the Impala. He was not found.
The officer went inside the store and found Chisholm still standing at the customer service desk with the stolen TV, the report states. Chisholm told police he did not realize the TV was stolen, but he was returning it for the man who just fled the store. Chisholm was unable to tell police why the man could not return the television himself. Police took Chisholm into custody. They later found a small baggie of marijuana in his right pocket. The manager showed authorities photos from Tega Cay of Chisholm stealing the TV, along with another person.
Police arrested Chisholm, charging him with possession of marijuana and receiving stolen goods.
