RICHBURG — Thursday night at Lewisville High School was the battle of two coaches who were once on the same side. Lewisville coach Billy Keels and North Central head man Robby Cash are former Wofford Terriers, but it was Keels third-ranked Lions who got the 7-1 win over the visiting Knights. Christian Cok pitched a complete game to get the victory for Lewisville. He allowed one run on three hits while striking out 11 against only one walk.
(Christian) throws it a little inside and sometimes thats a good thing because they get scared to get in the box too close to the plate, Keels said of his pitcher.
The Lions got on the board first when Cok scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the first. Cok and the Lions returned the favor in the top of the second when he threw a two-out wild pitch of his own, allowing Alex Tarlton to score to tie the game.
Lewisville busted things open in the home half of the inning with four runs on four hits. Holden Reynolds led off with a base hit to center field, Denver Mosley walked, and John Robbins singled to left to load the bases with no outs. The Lions took the lead when Austin Bradshaws hard-hit grounder ate up the shortstop and two runs scored. Before the dust settled around home plate, Nathan Turner followed with a double to the fence in left to plate two more and push the advantage to 5-1.
Cok got out of trouble of his own making in the third and fourth. After striking out the first two Knights in the third, a two-out base hit and hit batter brought up Tyler Bowers. Bowers drove one to deep right but Bradshaw was able to reach up and make the catch to end the inning. In the fourth, Cok hit two more batters and walked another to load the bases with one out. He was able to get Dylan Hendrix to pop foul to first and he struck out Chase Stephens swinging to end the threat.
I didnt think I had my control but I found it with my fast-ball and thats what kept me in the game, Cok said. My off-speed stuff came and went but I just lived off the fast-ball tonight.
The home team tacked on two more in the sixth without the benefit of a hit. The inning began with two errors and a hit batter to load the bases. Turner walked for his third RBI of the night and Zack Snipes followed with an RBI-sacrifice fly to center for the final 7-1 margin.
I enjoy coming over here and playing, Cash said. Billy and I go back a long way and I really look forward to coming up here and playing in this community. Theyve got a great gentleman as their coach. I expect them to go a long way in the playoffs.
