— A man police described as “grossly intoxicated” was arrested Saturday after he allegedly pulled a fire alarm at a Fort Mill hotel and turned on fire hoses, causing water to seep through seven floors.

According to a York County Sheriff’s Office report, Michael Scott Tolbert Jr. of Rock Hill has been charged with public disorderly conduct, property damage, and interfering with fire boxes.

The 25-year-old had not booked a room at the Clarion Hotel on Foothills Way, but was “trying to meet a female for [the] evening,” according to the report. Police responded to a fire alarm at the hotel where they saw Tolbert being escorted by fire personnel.

According to fire officials and witnesses, Tolbert was going through the hotel pulling fire alarms and turning on fire hoses. Water from one hose on the seventh floor of the hotel had seeped through the carpet all the way down to the hotel’s first floor, the report states.

Damages to all seven floors have been assessed at a minimum of $10,000. According to the report, Tolbert activated manual fire alarms located throughout the hotel and also triggered a fire alarm that goes off when water is released through a safety hose.

Tolbert denied knowing anything about the incident to police, despite being confronted by several hotel witnesses.
