Faith Baptist (Fla.) was deemed the champion of an abbreviated Wheels Invitational baseball tournament on Saturday.

Sideways rain prevented any of the four scheduled games from happening, including the final pool game delayed from Friday night, South Pointe versus Woodrow Wilson (W.Va.). South Pointe’s field was considered unplayable, and the same designation soon followed at Rock Hill’s and Northwestern’s fields.

Faith Baptist and Northwestern both finished 3-0 in pool play, but the Floridians took the tournament title by virtue of a tiebreaker – the fewest runs allowed through the first four innings. Marist (N.J.) pulling out of the tournament Friday night complicated the formula a bit, so tourney organizers tossed out Northwestern’s forfeit win, as well as Faith Baptist’s last pool game against Poca, an 8-7 win for the Eagles. That left Faith Baptist with two runs allowed in the previous two games’ first four innings, while Northwestern surrendered four.

The wet weather didn’t stop tournament organizers from awarding three scholarships in Larry “Wheels” Hinson’s memory. Northwestern’s Ryan Hardee, Rock Hill’s Cody Edkins and South Pointe’s Josh Massey were awarded the $750 scholarships. Hardee is headed to Anderson University, Edkins to Erskine and Massey to The Citadel.
