Man, 84, dies after scooter crash on I-77 in Rock Hill

— A Rock Hill man who had been riding his scooter on Interstate 77 on Monday died after he crashed on the side of the road, troopers say.

Brownie Barnes, 84, was riding a 2007 Honda scooter north on I-77 near the 72 mile marker at about 12:20 p.m. when he ran off the right side of the roadway, said Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Gary Miller.

He fell off the scooter, Miller said, and was not wearing a helmet.

Barnes was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where he later died.
