Field set for Class AAAA track and field state meet

The Class AAAA track and field state meet qualifier was held Saturday at Spring Valley High School.

Calvin Hudgins’ Northwestern program filled up the top-eight spots in a number of events. Heat winners plus next three best times advance to this weekend’s state meet, also at Spring Valley.

Trojan senior Christian Acker qualified for the state meet in four events, the 800 and 1600-meter runs and the 4x400 and 4x800 relays. Fellow Northwestern senior Trey Stanley set a new meet record in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing in 54.41, nearly a full second ahead of his closest competitor’s time.

A number of local athletes achieved National Elite times or distances: Northwestern’s Adia Simpkins, Reagen Caldwell, Rock Hill’s Tylia Moses and South Pointe’s Malecha Cousar all reached that threshold for girls, with Moses doing it twice in long and triple jump. For the boys, Clover’s Keyshawn Pressley, Northwestern’s Trey Stanley, Chad Fennell, Quantarius Caldwell and Daniel Bolin, South Pointe’s Khalil Jackson and Fort Mill’s Zach Riley produced National Elite times or jumps.

Boys

100-meter: Keyshawn Pressley, Clover, won his heat and finished third overall after 10.79 sprint.

400: Zach Riley, Fort Mill, won heat, finished second overall with 49.03.

800: Chad Fennell, Northwestern, ran a 1:56.66 to win his heat and finish first overall; Christian Acker, Northwestern, posted a 1:59.36 to finish fourth in a tough heat and sixth overall; Will Manning, Nation Ford, finished second in his heat with a 1:59.86, good for seventh overall.

1600: Christian Acker, Northwestern, qualified for his second event with a 4:26.33 that placed him third in his heat and fifth overall; Loftin Bridges, South Pointe, ran a 4:31.22 to finish fifth in a tough heat and eighth overall, the final spot.

3200: Cameron Ruppe, Rock Hill, ran a 9:46.01 to finish third in his heat and sixth overall; Jeremy Ricks, Fort Mill, placed fourth in his heat and seventh overall after running a 9:46.11.

110-meter hurdles: Trey Stanley, Northwestern, ran a 14.49 to finish second overall and win his heat.

400-meter hurdles: Trey Stanley, Northwestern, finished first overall after running a 54.41; Noah Walker, Northwestern, missed out on the 110-meter hurdles by a tenth of a second, but finished second his in heat and sixth overall to qualify in the 400-meter hurdles.

4x100 relay: Zaire Blanchard, Khalil Carter, Torrence Robinson, Jay Sellers, Trey Stanley and Noah Walker, Northwestern, finished second overall and won the second heat with a time of 42.28.

4x400 relay: Christian Acker, Chad Fennell, Trey Stanley, JT Thomas, Noah Walker, Miles Mingo, Northwestern, finished second with a time of 3:24.56, after winning the third heat.

4x800 relay: Christian Acker, Grayson Boatright, Chad Fennell, Parker Hooten, Kole Koterba and Chad Rollins, Northwestern, won the third heat and finished first overall, after posting a time of 8:04.98, nearly eight full seconds better than second-placed Fort Dorchester.

High jump: Quantarius Caldwell, Northwestern- finished third after clearing 6-6; Khalil Jackson, South Pointe, finished fourth, tied with Caldwell, also clearing 6-6; Matt Chapman, South Pointe, topped 6-4 to take fifth place.

Pole vault: Daniel Bolin, Northwestern, cleared 14-6 to finish in first place by a full foot; Drew Watts, Northwestern, took third place with a 13-6 jump; Jacob Parker, Northwestern, topped 13 feet even to finish in a three-way tie for fifth.

Long jump: Markell Castle, York, finished seventh with a jump of 21-5.

Triple jump: Markell Castle, York, placed third with a jump of 44-11.5.

Shot put: Chris Bouyer, Northwestern, finished in eighth place after a toss of 48-1.

Discus: Quinshun Evans, Lancaster, placed eighth with a throw of 147-8.

Girls

800-meter: Alicia Sanchez, Northwestern, finished eighth with a time of 2:25.07 to grab the last state qualifying spot.

1600: Victoria Burdette, South Pointe, played fourth overall and second in her heat, after running a 5:15.06.

100-meter hurdles: Adia Simpkins, Northwestern, won her heat and finished fifth overall with a time of 15.28.

400-meter hurdles: Adia Simpkins, Northwestern, won the fourth heat and placed second overall with a time of 1:04.86; Brianna Lewis, Northwestern,won the fifth heat and finished fifth overall, crossing the line in 1:07.07; Andi Enabenter gave Northwestern three in the state championship by finishing eighth overall, and second in her heat with a time of 1:08.33.

4x100 relay: Jada Barnes, Taylor Kirkland, Brianna Lewis, Adia Simpkins, Aubriana Thompson, and Nadia White, Northwestern, placed fifth with a time of 48.33 to qualify for state meet.

4x400 relay: Andi Enabenter, Taylor Kirkland, Brianna Lewis, Simone Robinson, Alicia Sanchez, and Adia Simpkins, Northwestern, ran a 4:00.82 to finish in fourth place.

High jump: Laura Arnson, Northwestern, cleared 5-2 to finish in seventh place.

Pole vault: Reagen Caldwell, Northwestern, cleared 10-6 to finish in fourth place; Donna Hood, Northwestern, ninth grader topped 10 feet to qualify in seventh.

Long jump: Tylia Moses, Rock Hill, jumped 18-5 to finish third.

Triple jump: Tylia Moses, Rock Hill, cleared 38-2 to finish second overall; Malecha Cousar, South Pointe- qualified by clearing 37-0.5.

Discus: Yasmine Robinson, Lancaster, placed fifth after throwing her plate 107-2; Cassidy Malchow, Northwestern, finished seventh with a throw of 103-5.
