— Three teenagers have been arrested in connection with 15 reported car break-ins in a Rock Hill neighborhood in which the car owners left their doors unlocked overnight.

Deputies have charged D'Aaron Colston, 18, Tavis Colston, 17, and another teen, 16, with breaking and entering auto.

The break-ins happened in the Village Green at Wellsbrook subdivision off Neely Creek Road, said Sheriff's Office spokesman Trent Faris.

Several items were stolen from the cars, Faris said, but it was unclear what types of valuables were taken.

Last summer, several subdivisions in Rock Hill, York and Clover experienced a rash of car break-ins. In all those cases, the car doors were unlocked, prompting authorities to once again reiterate that residents should "always lock your door at night," Faris said.

While juggling children and groceries, it's easy to forget to "do one simple thing by locking a car door," but mashing the car lock or pressing the button on a key fob "could prevent so many of these car break-ins," Faris said.

"Grab your valuables; take them inside," he said.

Residents who store their laptops, iPads, GPS devices and other electronics thieves typically target in their cars are encouraged to take them inside the house, or at least hide them in a trunk or glove compartment.

Car thieves, Faris said, "window shop," often tugging on a car door handle to see if it's open.

"If it's open, they just grab and go," he said.
