Eagles claim South Division title

John Menken hit a home run and four RBIs to help lead the Winthrop baseball team past Longwood 5-2 on Saturday afternoon.

With the win the Eagles won the 2014 Big South Conference South Division, finishing the regular season with a record of 24-32, 13-13 in Big South games while Longwood’s season came to a close with a 22-33 record, 9-17 in conference play.

Josh Strong got his first win this season, giving up two runs on nine hits in 7 1/3 innings before Jason Driver came in to close out the game and earn his third save of the year.

Longwood’s Mitchell Kuebbing took the loss, giving up three runs on five hits.

Babe Thomas started off the scoring for the Eagles in the fourth inning with his third home run of the year.

Leighton Daniels hit a single and Menken slammed his second home run of the year to bring both runners home and the score to 3-0.

Longwood got one run back in the eighth inning but Menken would bat in another two runs to make the game 5-1.

Thomas reached on an error by the centerfielder and advanced to second on a single by Cody Dolan.

Daniels tapped in a successful sacrifice bunt before Menken hit a two-RBI single.

Longwood made it 5-2 in the ninth inning with an RBI single by Alex Lewis.

The Winthrop Ballpark will host the 2014 Big South tournament, beginning Tuesday at 9:30 a.m.
