A new traffic signal is expected to be installed at the intersection of Dave Lyle Boulevard, Hood Center Drive and Mount Gallant Road in Rock Hill.

Installation of the signal will begin on Friday, Rock Hill officials said.

The new “flashing yellow arrow” is designed to help drivers make safer left-hand turns at the intersection. The signal will affect traffic in both directions –– for drivers turning onto Mount Gallant Road and those turning onto Hood Center Drive.

Currently, drivers on Dave Lyle Boulevard are permitted to make left-hand turns when the traffic signal is green. After the new signal is in place, drivers will be expected to turn only when the new flashing signal is green or yellow. A red left-hand turn signal will indicate that drivers are not allowed to turn onto Mount Gallant Road or Hood Center Drive.

At all times, drivers are expected to yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians.

The flashing arrow signal should improve traffic flow and reduce car accidents, according to a news release from the S.C. Department of Transportation. Officials say recent traffic studies showed the need for the additional traffic signal on Dave Lyle Boulevard.

The flashing arrow turn signal will be the first of its kind to be installed in York County. Similar flashing signals are planned for other intersections on Dave Lyle Boulevard.

A timeline for rolling out other flashing turn signals has not been announced.
