Democratic SC superintendent candidates debate Thursday on ETV

The four Democratic candidates for state superintendent of education will debate at 7 tonight on ETV.

The debate is the first of five that the public broadcaster, The Herald and six other newspapers – The (Columbia) State, The Beaufort Gazette, The (Hilton Head) Island Packet, The (Myrtle Beach) Sun News, The (Sumter) Item and the Greenville News – are sponsoring.

Who will be there? Former state Education Department official Montrio Belton of Fort Mill, former S.C. Education Association president Sheila Gallagher of Florence, state Rep. Jerry Govan of Orangeburg and former S.C. State dean of graduate studies Thomas Thompson of Forest Acres.

What’s next? The GOP candidates for superintendent will debate at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

On deck: Subsequent debates will feature the Democratic candidates for the U.S. Senate seat held by Republican Tim Scott, the GOP candidates for lieutenant governor and the Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate seat held by Lindsey Graham.
