Suspicious suitcase drop in Lake Wylie prompts police call

York County deputies say an unknown man suspiciously discarded a black bag or suitcase near the boat landing at Lake Wylie last week.

A 52-year-old man from Lancaster called police on Thursday morning after watching the man loiter around some trash cans and "hurl" the bag into the water, according to a York County Sheriff's Office report.

Before throwing the item into the lake, the man "looked around very suspiciously to see if anyone was looking at him," the man told deputies. He estimated that the black bag or suitcase may have landed in the water about 30 feet from the shoreline, the report states.

The unknown man then left in his car quickly, according to the report. Deputies say they've marked the case as "suspicious activity" and littering.
