— A 22-year-old Hilton Head Island man was arrested Thursday, accused of beating and robbing a tourist on the beach earlier this month, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Gregory Edwards was charged with strong-arm robbery after a 23-year-old man from Evans, Ga., was attacked June 11 by a man and woman on the beach at Palmetto Dunes, Sgt. Robin McIntosh said. The victim's description of the man included a distinct tattoo, which helped lead deputies to Edwards, McIntosh said.

The victim told deputies he drank with an unknown man and woman on the beach until the man offered him drugs, and the victim refused, according to the incident report. The victim tried to walk away, but the man began punching him in the face and choking him, and the woman tried to gouge his eyes, the report said.

Deputies have not identified the woman or recovered the wallet or cellphone she and the man stole, McIntosh said.

Edwards was released Thursday from the Beaufort County Detention Center on a $10,000 personal-recognizance bond, according to the jail log.
