A Charlotte man was arrested in Rock Hill on Friday for firing a gun while under the influence of alcohol, police say.
Derrick Woods, 37, was arrested late Friday night after an officer heard gunshots in the area East Main and East Black streets. Officers were looking for the source of the gunshots near Kimbrook Court when they saw Woods.
When asked if he had fired the shots, Woods said no, but officers saw shell casings near him. Woods then said that he had fired multiple rounds from a pistol. When he saw police pull up, Woods put the gun in a backyard, where officers recovered it wedged in a wooden fence.
The magazine and chamber of the gun were empty and officers found 27 shell casings on the ground. Woods was taken to the Rock Hill city jail.
While in processing, Woods smelled of alcohol and told officers he had “five or six beers,” but he didn’t know how big the beers were. He failed several sobriety tests and blew a .10 blood alcohol level in a breathalyzer.
Woods was charged with using a firearm while under the influence and issued a citation for discharging a firearm in city limits.
