Nation Ford's run through the state volleyball playoffs came to a screeching halt Thursday at No. 1 Dorman. The Cavaliers won the match 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-16). Nation Ford finished the year with a 26-4 record.
Dorman (26-1) advances to the state finals on Saturday where it will meet Lexington, a 3-0 winner over White Knoll on Thursday.
The Cavaliers will return to the state championship match for the first time since 2005. The team's last title came in 2004. Coach Paula Kirkland and her team will be seeking their 11th state championship. Kirkland ranks third on the state's list of all-time coaching victories.
Bobby Stevens, who has coached the varsity boys basketball team at Rock Hill High School for the past 11 years, is retiring from coaching.
The regular season for South Carolina's high school volleyball teams has ended, and the state playoffs begin on Monday.
One of the best volleyball matches of the season was played Tuesday night at Northwestern. The Trojans, Region 3-AAAA's third-place team, took second-place Fort Mill to five sets. The deciding set is played to 15 points but must be won by two points. The Yellow Jackets won, 21-19.
Next Friday is a mandated furlough day for the teachers in Rock Hill School District Three and has caused the athletics directors and football coaches at the three in-town schools to consider moving their games to Thursday.
Due to the prospect of more rain in the area today, the 26th annual Herald/York County Cross Country Meet has been postponed until Saturday.
The fourth annual Northwestern Trojan Volleyball Invitational is Saturday and features varsity teams from Rock Hill High, South Pointe, York, Fort Mill, Indian Land, North Central, Brookland-Cayce, Hartsville, Keenan and South Point (N.C.).
