NEWS OF THE DAY

You can tell everyone's ready to leave, when half the roster did its hazing early so they could bolt this morning.

The defensive players taped their six rookies to the goalpost, and started dousing them with Gatorade, ice and water.

LB Thomas Davis and DE Stanley McClover climbed a hydraulic lift (about 8 to 10 feet up) to get a better angle on the soaking, which nearly gave John Fox a heart attack hoping no one fell off.

WHAT WE LEARNED

WR Steve Smith's road to redemption's going to be a long one.

Since breaking Ken Lucas' nose, Smith's often seen around campus having heart-to-heart talks with guys as he tries to win back some trust here.

Tuesday, he was huddled with SS Chris Harris after lunch.

The reality is, not much of what Smith says to anyone will matter much. His actions will do the talking.

STOCK UP

During some goal line drills, C Geoff Hangartner made a nice one-handed catch for a touchdown beyond the reach of the slightly more athletic Julius Peppers. As MLB Jon Beason yelled "Don't do it," Hangartner wound up for a big spike.

STOCK DOWN

Hygiene. After the rookie soaking, S Joe Fields said: "That blue Gatorade is good, I drank some of that while I was on there." Lord knows where it had been.

DID YOU SEE THAT?

Tuesday brought the most comical practice fight ever. OT Rueben Riley and DT Nick Hayden were squaring off in one-on-one drills when tempers flared.

Wild haymakers are usually the protocol for such events. But Riley surprised everyone by dropping into an exaggerated John L. Sullivan boxing stance, and threw four quick jabs at Hayden's helmet and chest, leading with his left. It honestly looked like he was joking -- Hayden thought so -- but Riley was furious.

That didn't stop his teammates from cracking up with laughter, some of them courteous enough to hide their faces until Riley was calmed. DT Maake Kemoeatu punctuated the scene by yelling: "He's just hungry, that's all."

NUMBER OF THE DAY

6

Days since they've gone full pads for practice. They're winding down here.

SIDELINES

DT Maake Kemoeatu is a crafty veteran, as well as a giant one. He dropped one of his gloves on his way out to practice, which McClover alerted him to, laughing as he walked past it. Rather than trudge up the hill himself, Kemoeatu waited for a volunteer, and RB Nick Goings was happy to help him out.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"That's definitely true. I guess I should have thrown my hand up for a fair catch. But I wanted a chance to return it. I didn't really care about getting hit or anything like that because it's football. I should have thrown my hand up and made the smart decision, but you live and you learn." -- WR Jason Carter, on some of his death-defying decisions returning punts in last week's game.

TODAY

The Panthers will wrap up another training camp with a short walk-through at 9:30 a.m. Then they'll put Spartanburg in the rear view mirror, as they head to Philadelphia for their second preseason game.
