Former Indian Land standout Travis McConnell is a freshman pitcher-outfielder for the Blue Hose. McConnell has yet to see action and is battling back from an injury suffered during fall practice.

• WESTERN CAROLINA: Sophomore forward Kristen Feemster, who played at Clover, has helped the Lady Catamounts to a 25-8 basketball season.

The 6-foot Feemster averaged 4.2 points and 3.9 rebounds a game as coach Kellie Harper's team made it to the championship game of the Southern Conference Tournament. The second-seeded Lady Catamounts lost to top-seeded Chattanooga, 71-59.

• WINGATE: The Bulldogs' season isn't over just yet . They earned an at-large spot in the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional Basketball Tournament this weekend.

The No. 3-seeded Bulldogs (23-6), led by former Northwestern standout Sean Barnette, face No. 6-seeded Catawba (19-11) on Saturday in Augusta, Ga. Catawba won the South Atlantic Conference's automatic bid by winning the SAC tournament. Wingate and Lenoir-Rhyne earned at-large bids.

• WINTHROP: Former Eagles right-handed pitcher Kevin Slowey is making a bid to become a part of the Minnesota Twins starting rotation.

After a slow spring training start, Slowey had his best outing on Monday, pitching three scoreless innings in the Twins' 4-2 victory over Florida. Slowey scattered six hits, didn't issue a walk and struck out three batters.

The performance was a confidence booster for Slowey and Twins manager Ron Gardenhire. For the spring, Slowey is 1-1 with an 8.10 ERA in three games. He's pitched 6 2-3 innings, walked four batters, struck out eight and allowed 15 hits.

In his first outings this spring, Slowey yielded six earned runs on nine hits in 3 2-3 innings.
