Charleston Southern
Coach: Barclay Radebaugh (40-78, fifth season; 61-86 overall, sixth season).
Last Season: 4-14 Big South (tie-ninth), 9-20 overall.
Possible starters (x-returning): x-G Jamarco Warren 5-11 Jr. (17.8 ppg, 2.8 apg); G Stanley Honorat 6-3 Jr. (JC transfer); C Billy Blackmon 6-10 Sr. (injured last year); x-F Joel Lamb 6-7 So. (5.9 ppg, 3.7 rpg); x-F Kelvin Martin 6-5 So. (9 ppg, 6.9 rpg).
Others to watch: F Quinton Goods 6-9 Sr. (2.2 ppg, 2.5 rpg); G Austin Johnson 6-3 Jr. (4.5 ppg, 2 rpg); G Jeremy Sexton 6-2 Fr.; G Glenn Self 6-0 So.; F Kenny Mitchell 6-7 Fr.; C Patrick Shaughnessy 6-9 Fr.; F Tom Tankelewicz 6-5 Fr.; F Zimmy Nwogbo 6-7 Fr.
What to expect: Radebaugh lost would-be starters Omar Carter (the 2007 BSC freshman of the year) and Tovi Bailey, but it could be addition by subtraction. Radebaugh thinks he has a roster of players finally committed to playing some defense. Martin is one of the best athletes in the league and could have a breakout season. Warren, who launched 408 shots last year, needs some scoring help, Blackmon and Goods need to produce in the lane and freshmen have to offer some help. Still, this is basically the same group from a year ago. Finishing .500 will be a good year.
Coastal Carolina
Coach: Cliff Ellis (24-35, third season; 636-384 overall, 34th season).
Last Season: 5-13 Big South (sixth), 11-20 overall.
Possible starters (x-returning): x-F Joseph Harris 6-5 Sr. (15.2 ppg, 11.4 rpg); F Chad Gray 6-7 Jr. (transfer from SC); x-C Jon Pack 6-10 So. (3.1 ppg, 3.3 rpg); x-G Logan Johnson 6-6 Sr. (6.9 ppg, 3.6 rpg); G Kierre Greenwood 6-2 Fr.
Others to watch: G Danny Nieman 6-2 Fr.; G Dexter Moore 6-4 So. (7.2 ppg, 1.3 rpg); G Mario Edwards 6-3 Sr. (9 ppg, 3.7 rpg); F Chris Evans 6-7 Fr.; G Tre Lee 6-3 Fr.; F Sam McLaurin 6-8 R-Fr.; F Marcus Macellari 6-7 R-Fr.
What to expect: Those folks who slated the Chants for a second-division finish might be very, very surprised. Other than Harris and Johnson, Ellis now has his own players in the roster. Gray will team with Harris to give Ellis the most athletic forward combo in the league. Greenwood should challenge for freshman of the year. There is more athleticism, speed and depth. Don't be surprised if the Chants make a run at the league title.
Gardner-Webb
Coach: Rick Scruggs (191-197, 16th season; 369-312 overall, 22nd season).
Last Season: 9-9 Big South (tie-fifth), 13-17 overall.
Possible starters (x-returning): x-G Grayson Flittner 6-0 Sr. (14.5 ppg, 3.8 apg); x-G C.J. Hailey 6-0 Sr. (6.3 ppg, 1.5 rpg); x-C Auryn MacMillan 6-8 Sr. (9.4 ppg, 5.2 rpg); x-F Joshua Henley 6-3 So. (6.8 ppg, 10.3 rpg); F Luke Engellen 6-7 Jr. (JC transfer).
Others to watch: G Anton Silver 6-2 Sr. (3.7 ppg, 2 rpg); G David Brown 6-2 Jr. (JC transfer); G Bryan Burrell 6-1 Jr. (JC transfer); F Jonathan Moore 6-4 Jr. (JC transfer); F Keith Manley 6-6 Fr.; G Brian McNair 6-0 Fr.; F Stefon Johnson 6-6 Fr.; G Thomas Staton 6-6 Fr.
What to expect: Flittner, a preseason all-league pick, was slowed most of last year by injuries and had microfracture surgery on his right knee in the summer. He has been doing mostly rehabilitation on the knee and no one is certain when — or if — he'll play this year. Couple that with losing Aaron Linn to graduation and suddenly the Bulldogs lost a lot of bite. Scruggs has tried to fill the holes with juco transfers who don't usually play well their first seasons. The Bulldogs will try and push the ball which puts pressure on MacMillan and Henley to rebound. Flittner, if he plays, will be easier to guard without Linn around. Too many jucos and no Flittmer could mean a near bottom of the pack finish for the Bulldogs.
High Point
