Revivo's four goals lead Eagles to win

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. -- Senior forward Daniel Revivo netted four goals to help Winthrop to its first victory of the season with a 4-1 win against Lipscomb in game three of the Soccer For A Cure Classic at Gardner-Webb.

Winthrop (1-1) trailed 1-0 just 10 minutes into the match as the Bisons were awarded a penalty kick as Patrick Mitrovich was whistled for a foul inside the 18-yard box on a one-on-one. In the process, Mitrovich was kicked in the face and was down for several minutes. The senior goalkeeper stepped into the net to take the penalty shot, but was pulled from the game immediately following the goal.

Winthrop coach Rich Posipanko was forced to use backup Mike McCullion for the remainder of the game as Mitrovich couldn't return to the match. McCullion stepped in nicely and kept the score sheet clean for 80 minutes.

Revivo scored his first goal in the 26th minute on a free kick after Michael Luk was tripped just outside the box. Revivo set up and bent the ball over the wall and into the right corner, freezing Bisons keeper Patrick Walsh.

"Obviously, I'm pleased with the result," said Posipanko. "Scoring four goals was great since we hadn't scored in three previous games (including preseason). I thought our decision-making, intensity level and effort was much better today. Considering we played without one of our top defenders and our goalkeeper I thought defensively we did very well."

Both teams battled over the next 51 minutes before the Eagles finally broke through to take the lead in the 77th minute. The play began in the back of the Eagles defense as Otto Loewy intercepted a pass and proceeded to take off down the right side. Loewy pushed the ball past the left back and was able to chase it down and deliver a ball in front of the net for Revivo. Revivo gained control and placed the ball into the net for the game-winner.

The Eagles added an insurance goal in the 87th minute as Matthew Skonicki sent a ball over the Bisons' defense, setting Revivo up for another one-on-one. He scored his fourth in the 90th minute. It is the second four-goal game of his career and the fifth by an Eagle since 2005.

The win is the first for McCullion in his collegiate career and he earned Soccer For A Cure All-Classic Team honors. Loewy and Revivo were also named to the all-classic team.

Winthrop will be back in action on Friday against UNC Greensboro at 7:30 p.m. in the UNCG/adidas Classic.
