GAFFNEY -- D'Edward Burris used ìa little bit of this and a little bit of that,î to lead Gaffney to a 41-14 win Friday night at The Reservation.
Burris accounted for five touchdowns, and led the Indians on six straight scoring drives after punting on their first possession.
He rushed for 44 yards and two touchdowns, while passing for 164 yards and three scores to three different receivers.
ìI try to give them a little bit of this and a little bit of that to mix them up so know one can catch on to my moves,î Burris said.
Burris certainly kept the Yellow Jackets off balance, rushing for 21- and 23-yard scores late in the second quarter to extend the Indians lead to 28-0 at the half.
“He's a good athlete. He's still learning how to be a quarterback, and when he totally learns how he's going to be a good one,” Gaffney coach Phil Strickland said.
Kenard Lipscomb led Gaffney in rushing with 60 yards, including a 50 yard score, all in the first half.
Quinshad Davis finished with three catches for 48 yards and a touchdown, while Khris Brown added two catches for 52 yards and a score.
The Indians' defense also played well, holding Fort Mill scoreless until the fourth quarter.
“They did some stuff that we weren't expecting tonight. I thought we were really flat tonight coming out with so many distractions,” Strickland said of his team's homecoming performance.
“We had some subs in there, but they were getting after it. I thought for the most part the defense played good.”
If there was a downside for Gaffney, it was their penalties.
The Indians committed 12 penalties, including multiple offsides fouls on their defense.
“We were kind of joking on the sidelines on the headsets, I think the linebacker jumped offsides, outside linebacker, even the cornerbacks at the end of the game. Everybody got a piece of it, so we've got to cut down on those in the next couple of weeks,” Strickland said.
