Lewisville 15, Great Falls 14

- The Herald

RICHBURG -- Timothy McCullough ran for 94 yards and two touchdowns Friday to lead Lewisville to a thrilling 15-14 comeback victory over Great Falls in the 56th meeting of the Chester County rivalry.

The senior fullback punched in a 2-point conversion on a fake extra point attempt with six minutes left in the contest, and the Lions held on to outlast the Red Devils and give first-year coach Marvin Burke a “W” in the series.

“The kids came out and fought hard,” Burke said. “I told them that it was maybe going to come down to the last play and that we had to execute. There were some phases of the game we didn't execute, but I told them we would keep fighting and give ourselves a chance to win at the end.”

The surprise play turned heads on both sides of the Lewisville High stadium, but a bit of lobbying earlier in the week by Logan Pemberton persuaded Burke to add it to this week's game plan. Pemberton, who also plays baseball for the Lions, suggested they try a fake PAT and make it into a shovel pass along the lines of a shortstop turning a double play.

“He said we run it on offense and asked why he couldn't run it on special teams, so it's something he kind of thought about, and I just put the wrinkle in,” Burke said. “We ran it in practice, and it ended up working out well.”

The Lions struggled to move the ball all night and only had one possession in the third quarter as Great Falls dominated all facets of the game.

The Red Devils racked up 319 yards in total offense, 246 rushing, compared to the Lions' 130. Great Falls picked up 17 first downs, all but one coming on the ground, and Lewisville collected only seven. Zach Barber, a senior running back for the Red Devils, ran for 100 yards on 12 carries.

The loss is a head-scratcher for Great Falls coach Kenny Schofield.

“That's the way the season is going,” he said. “We're just having some tough luck on going and getting through things, and we have a very, very young team. For us to be in the game as close as we were is probably a blessing, so you got to look at it that way.”

“We ran the ball well tonight, but then you just look up and we're in a bad situation.”

Great Falls (2-7, 2-3 Region 3-A) used an 11-play drive that lasted six minutes and stretched into the second quarter to draw first blood in the rivalry matchup. Ernest Talford took the first carry of the second quarter in from 5 yards out for the score.

The quarter got ugly after Talford's touchdown, as both teams turned the ball over on four straight drives, three fumbles and an interception.

Lewisville closed the gap with a four-play, 43-yard drive capped by a 12-yard scoring run by McCullough. Pemberton converted the PAT, and the Lions trailed 8-7 with 4:25 left the half.

The Red Devils chewed up clock in the third and only allowed one Lewisville drive, a three-play drive that totaled minus-3 yards.

Great Falls took a 14-7 advantage on its opening drive of the quarter after Shaq Lamar passed to a wide-open Terrell Hutchinson in the end zone. The score was made possible thanks to powerful running by Barber, who tallied 45 of his 100 yards on the drive.

“We're really pleased with Zach Barber tonight,” Schofield said. “I thought he ran extremely hard, and he deserves a lot of credit.”
