Indian Land tussle leads to probation, suspensions

- The Herald

Indian Land's varsity boys basketball team was placed on a year's probation, fined $300 and received multiple suspensions for a bench-clearing incident in the Warriors' home game against McBee on Tuesday.

The sanctions were handed down by the South Carolina High School League. Being on probation means the team can play out its regular season, but will not be eligible for the playoffs.

Indian Land athletic director Mike Mayer said he will call McBee this morning to find out what sanctions the Panthers received.

"At this time it wouldn't be fair to say who or how many of our players were suspended. Let's just say multiple," Mayer said Thursday night. "We met with the players and a group of parents today and told them of the league's decision.

"My principal, Kathy Faris, and I will meet with our superintendent (this morning) and discuss any further options."

One option could be to appeal the ruling, or parts of it, but Mayer would not discuss the possibility of that happening.

A hard foul on an Indian Land player on a breakaway was followed by an altercation, and most of the players from both teams spilled onto the court. According to league rules, any player who leaves the bench area during the game must sit out at least the next game.

The game was halted with Indian Land leading 40-28 early in the third quarter.

Mayer said his school's road game against Great Falls will be played tonight as scheduled. Junior varsity players will replace the suspended players. The JV game was canceled and the girls play at 6:30.

Mayer said most of the players will back when The Warriors travel to North Central on Monday.
