INDIAN LAND — Missed opportunities and the loss of fourth-quarter momentum ruined the Homecoming parade for the Indian Land Warriors as they lost 35-12 to the Volunteers of Andrew Jackson on Friday night at The Reservation.

The Warriors had scored 12 unanswered points after falling behind 14-0 in the first, and they had just hit on a 34-yard pass play from Josh Camarire to Justin Gordon to end the third quarter.

Momentum disappeared just as quickly as it had arrived when Deon Sayles, who had an otherwise productive game coming back off an injury, fumbled after an 11-yard run on the first play of the fouth quarter at the Volunteers’ 29-yard line.

AJ responded with a quick eight-play, 71-yard TD drive on which it converted two third-and-10s for a 21-12 lead. The deciding play was the second TD hook-up of the night from Daniel Pardue to Justin Sellers on a 12-yard slant with 9:37 to play. The Vols tacked on two more fourth-quarter scores, including one with 44 seconds left to make what had been a close game in the fourth look like a rout.

Warriors coach Mike Mayer agreed about the turning point of the game.

“We let them convert two third-and-10s on the drive after the fumble,” he said. “If we could have stopped them on that drive, I think we would have won the game.”

Indian Land did force three turnovers of its own on the night. Ted Boston had the most dynamic play as he started the Warriors’ scoring with a 42-yard interception return in the second quarter.

Justin Gordon had the other score for the Warriors with a 4-yard TD catch in the third quarter. He finished the night with five catches for 70 yards.
