FORT MILL — It’s hard to follow up a 63-0 beating, but Chesterfield tried its hand at it against Indian Land on Friday night.
After beating Indian Land 63-0 last year, Chesterfield followed with a tame 53-0 onslaught in which there was no doubt who the victor would be from the opening kick. The Rams scored their first touchdown within the first two minutes of the game on a 2-yard run by Chesterfield quarterback Akeem Johnson.
The Rams came into Indian Land motivated after their first loss of the season to Class AA powerhouse Pageland Central.
“After a tough loss last week, I wanted us to come out and play well,” Chesterfield coach Steve Taneyhill said of his team’s 21-20 loss. “Tonight, we came out on a mission, and it showed early.”
By halftime, it was obvious that the tomahawk gracing the 50-yard line of “The Reservation” at Indian Land signified the thumping the Warriors endured on their home field. They trailed 34-0 at the start of the third quarter, and it only got worse from there. Chesterfield continued its onslaught and finished with a 13-point third quarter.
The Warriors’ offensive line was in the backfield all night, only managing 2 yards rushing. The Warriors struggled in their passing game, producing only 28 yards.
While Indian Land never gave up, it was simply overmatched. The Warriors couldn’t stop the Rams’ offensive attack, allowing deep passing plays when the offense aligned four receivers and no running backs in the backfield.
Johnson gave the Warriors fits for the entirety of the night, lining up all over the field for Chesterfield. The quarterback saw time at safety while kicking every Ram punt, extra point and attempting a 36-yard field goal that went wide left. He finish the game with 279 yards passing and four touchdowns.
Indian Land was missing 13 players from the game — five injured, one suspended Monday and seven Friday afternoon. Indian Land coach Mike Mayer said the players were suspended for “violation of team rules.”
Mayer said he was proud of his players that were on the field.
“The kids we had play hard,” Mayer said. “They played the whole game, didn’t give up, and we’ll come back next week prepared to win a ball game.”
