LANCASTER — On Senior Night at Lancaster Memorial Stadium, the public address announcer told the crowd that there would be fireworks after the game.
The Lancaster Bruins’ offense was able to produce enough of its own, and the defense was able to keep a couple of mistakes from blowing up in their face, leading to a 30-0 win Friday over Nation Ford.
The beginning of the game was sloppy on both sides, particularly for Lancaster. The Bruins had trouble getting calls in on offense, and they gave Nation Ford a great chance to score when the Bruins fumbled inside their 10. The Falcons could not capitalize, however, as Trevor Witcher missed a 31-yard field goal to keep it scoreless after the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter, Bruins quarterback Matt Reese injured his hand on a fumble. Sophomore Kendrick Thompson stepped in for him and quickly hit Michael Catoe on a 47-yard pass to help set up Anna Funderburk’s 27-yard field goal. Thompson led the Bruins on two other scoring drives, the first capped by Jamias Clark’s 7-yard run. Then, Thompson snuck it in from 1-yard out to make it 16-0 Bruins at the half.
Thompson was 6-12 passing for 100 yards.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Falcons had one last chance to get back in the game. At the start of the fourth quarter, Nation Ford blocked a Bruins punt inside Lancaster’s 30. Nation Ford could not take advantage though, because Lancaster’s defense sacked Joey White on third and fourth downs. For the game, the Bruins’ defense had four sacks, 2.5 by Daniel Foster, and held the Falcons to five first downs and 76 net yards.
Lancaster’s last two scores came on a 25-yard run by Clark and a 6-yard run by Wilrick Waiters.
After the game, Lancaster coach Bennie McMurray praised his defense.
“Our defense has been there all year,” McMurray said. “(The defense) came in with a mentality to hunker down and make a stand.
“(Thompson) did a great job when he came in the game,” McMurray said.
A good week of practice was beneficial to the Bruins, Clark said.
“Our offensive line wore them down at the end of the game. Our defense is great and played an excellent game,” Clark said. Lancaster opens region play at home against South Pointe next Friday. Nation Ford will host Northwestern.
