BUFORD — In Buford, Lewisville scored the lone touchdown of the second half, but it gave the Lions the cushion they needed to hold off Buford.

The win moved Lewisville to 4-2 overall, but more importantly, the Lions ran their Region 3-A record to 2-0 and kept pace with Chesterfield and Great Falls at the top of the standings.

Both scored in each of the first two quarters. The difference was kicker Logan Pemberton, who converted two PATs that gave the Lions a 14-12 lead at the half.

“I’m going to say it like Wake Forest coach Al Groh said after his team beat Florida State,” Lions coach Floyd Drum said. “A win is a win and we’ll take it. It rained the entire game and conditions were sloppy. But our kids played hard.

“I apologized to them after the game for getting on them earlier in the season when we won a sloppy game against Ben Lippen. From now on, I’m going to look at each win the same way coach Groh does.”

Buford scored first, but missed the extra point. Lewisville answered quickly, going up 7-6 on quarterback Isaiah Johnson’s 40-yard run and Pemberton’s kick.

Lewisville increased its lead in the second quarter, again on a play powered by Johnson. He threw only one pass, but it was caught by his brother, Elijah Johnson for a 25-yard TD. It was a busted running play.

Buford scored again, this time after recovering a Lions fumble, and missed the extra point to trail 14-12 going into the break.

“Our defense played well,” Drum said. “Our sophomore linebacker, Jeremy Green, had another big game.”

The defense set up the final score after neither team got on the board in the third quarter. Johnny Smith fell on the Yellow Jackets’ 12. On first down, Isaiah Johnson sprinted into the end zone. Pemberton converted again to end the scoring at 21-12.
