Rock Hill 63, Ridge View 0

- Herald correspondent

BLYTHEWOOD -- Homecoming opponent, huh?

Rock Hill hammered Ridge View 63-0 on Friday, ruining the Blazers' Homecoming and keeping their perfect season going. The Bearcats, led by six accounted touchdowns from the versatile Jatavius Stewart, bludgeoned Ridge View with a mix of offense and big plays, winning the Region 4-AAAA opener for each team.

“We played well,” Bearcats coach Joe Montgomery said. “We ran well, we threw well. Our defense played well.”

Rock Hill (7-0, 1-0 Region 4-AAAA) scored on its first three possessions and turned a Blazers fumble into Stewart's 30-yard touchdown recovery. Stewart also snuck in a 4-yard score and took a shovel pass from Randall Dixon for a 12-yard burst, shredding tackles in a recurring theme.

The Bearcats simply didn't allow themselves to be sidetracked, the halftime celebration and a muggy evening cast aside for the sake of their mission. Jamal Tyler blasted through six tackles on a 58-yard jaunt to set up Stewart's first rushing touchdown; the defense sacked Jalen Perry four times; Dre Williams intercepted one pass, broke up another and returned a punt to set up yet another score; and Rock Hill never quit driving.

The Bearcats outgained Ridge View (2-5, 0-1) 272 yards to 75 — and there was still a half to play. If there was any remaining doubt, Tyler removed it on the first play of the third quarter with a 45-yard run.

Two plays later, Dixon faded a 5-yard arc to Xavier McFadden to make it 35-0. After that, Rock Hill scored two more touchdowns — on the first play of each of its next two possessions.

Stewart danced into the end zone on the receiving end of an 88-yard catch-and-run for his fifth score of the evening.
