Rock Hill 50, Blythewood 21

- bbyers@heraldonline.com

The Rock Hill Bearcats had several of those moments where they seemed to forget to play defense on Friday night in their 50-21 win over the Blythewood Bengals.

It's a mystery why it happens, and the latest spell had Bearcats defensive coordinator Mike Martin yelling into his headset from the pressbox at District Three Stadium to his defensive assistants on the field. It got so bad at times that Martin was instructing his coaches to pull players and replace them with one who could tackle.

But the Bearcats showed once again that they they know how to light up a scoreboard and that playing offense is never going to be a problem this season. The 50 points they put on the Bengals gave them 459 this season, as they ran their record to 10-0 overall and 5-0 in Region 4-AAAA.

The Bearcats' win, coupled with South Pointe's 52-0 road victory over Spring Valley, set up a winner-take-all meeting between the two Friday at District Three Stadium for the region title.

“This was a big win for us, because now no matter what happens next week we are assured of a first-round home playoff game,'” Bearcats coach Joe Montgomery said. “If we had lost tonight it would have created a possible three-way tie that would have included Blythewood. We just don't have enough points to have finished first or second if the three of us ended up tied.”

Rock Hill had another tremendous offensive showing Friday, scoring seven touchdowns and a field goal.

Leading the way for the Bearcats was tailback Jamal Tyler with his 22 carries for 159 yards and two TDs. But running back/receiver/quarterback Jatavius Stewart stole the show. Stewart, named to South Carolina's Shrine Bowl team on Thursday, had only three carries, one for a 3-yard loss.

But he easily made up for that one with TDs runs of 73 and 79 yards.

“We have good speed, and if our blockers give us a small hole, we have a shot at taking it all the way,'” Stewart said. “All of our blockers gave us the space we needed. That group up front, they are getting better and better. Those guys are very good and are the key to our success.'”

Rock Hill led 17-0 after the first quarter on touchdown runs by Tyler and Stewart and a 26-yard field goal by Fernando Gonzalez.

Four TDs, two by each team, highlighted the second quarter, and the Bearcats led 31-14 after Blythewood's Demonta Brown electrified the crowd with a 91-yard kickoff return.

Rock Hill outscored Blythewood 19-7 in the second half and led 50-14 on Aaron Hemphill's 22-yard touchdown pass from Randall Dixon.

“We see 50 points on the scoreboard, and it feels good because we know we did our job,'' Bearcats offensive lineman Ruben Velazquez said. “We like blocking for our backs. All of them are fast. We know if we open a hole, they are fast enough to run it in no matter where we are on the field.''
